Mekong Meal

June-chan treated me to a Viet dinner at Le Saigon on the Westside in exchange for helping her with her French studies. I always wondered who decided which nouns would be masculine or feminine in French. Why is Saigon considered macho when a trash can (la poubelle) is considered girlie? The salad that June-chan and I shared was decidedly masculine, what with its slivers of pork and shrimp, julienned carrots, shredded lettuce and generous dousing of fish sauce. The substitution of green lettuce for the traditional papaya in the salad revoked any seal of authenticity, however. Still, I had no problem stuffing the meal into my girlie mouth.
